Subject: Autoclave Chamber

Dear all,

I'v got a quesiton concerning the chamber of the Autoclave that I had just bought. Well, it seems to me that there are some sort of materials that coat the surface of the inside chamber which was made by stanless steel, I suppose.

I am not sure if it was actually put on by the manufacturer and salesperson was not actually helful in explaining me this. Although the seller gave me an explanation that it was a specially made stanless steel, however to me, it doesn't appear to be like that as generally the surface of the stanless steel is very recognizable.

So, what is the material they use to produce then? and if it is a stanless steel, what is the coating? and if so, I am afraid if this coating will come out later on, especially in a very high temperature or will have any harm to the users.

Could anybody help me answerig this question

Thanks in advance

Scott

Dear Scott,

At first I must say that the information in your question makes it very difficult to decide what to answer. It seems to me you have a steriliser chamber which is not made of stainless steel. The surface treatment of stainless steel will normally be: electro polished, grained, pickled and passivated or glass pearl blasted. You are mentioning a coating. It is not clear what it is or how it looks. However I know two different kind of coatings for autoclaves, at first various ceramics, mainly used on steel or PTFE used on various materials but often on aluminium. These are used for autoclaves in various applications but not in sterilisers for medical devices. I suppose the chamber you bought is not made of stainless steel, but of course this can only be answered by the manufacturer or its representative. It should be stated in the documents accompanying the equipment. I believe your problem makes it clear that the procedure of the purchase of equipment has to be documented very well. This gives the purchaser a tool to put the pressure on a supplier to come forward with sufficient and correct information.

Best Regards,

Henk Ras

Dear Scott,
What you are describing sounds like galvanized iron. You may have been cheated out of a stainless steel vessel.
