Bactrim is available in several formulations. For oral administration, there are tablets and a liquid suspension. Tablets typically come in two strengths: Bactrim DS (double strength, containing 800 mg of sulfamethoxazole and 160 mg of trimethoprim) and Bactrim regular strength (containing 400 mg sulfamethoxazole and 80 mg trimethoprim). The liquid suspension is usually dosed based on milliliters, with the concentration reflecting that of the regular strength tablet per 5 mL.

Indications and Usage

Bactrim is indicated for the treatment of certain bacterial infections, including urinary tract infections, acute otitis media in children, acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis in adults, travelers’ diarrhea in adults, and Pneumocystis jiroveci pneumonia. It is also sometimes used for the prophylaxis of certain infections in individuals with weakened immune systems.

Dosage and Administration

The dosage of Bactrim may vary depending on the type and severity of the infection as well as patient factors such as age, weight, and kidney function. It is generally taken with a full glass of water and can be taken with or without food. For children, the dose is typically based on body weight and should be precisely measured when using the liquid suspension. Pharmacokinetics

Concurrent use with methotrexate may increase the risk of methotrexate toxicity. Bactrim may also increase potassium levels when taken with ACE inhibitors, ARBs, or potassium supplements. Adverse Reactions

In patients with renal or hepatic impairment, dosage adjustments may be necessary. Bactrim is also contraindicated in infants under two months of age due to the risk of kernicterus.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Bactrim is classified as FDA pregnancy category D. It should be avoided during pregnancy, especially near term, due to the risk of harm to the fetus, including kernicterus. Bactrim is also excreted in breast milk and may be contraindicated for use in breastfeeding women due to the potential risk to the infant.

Overdosage Information

Symptoms of Bactrim overdose may include nausea, vomiting, dizziness, headache, drowsiness, and unconsciousness. Severe cases can lead to bone marrow suppression and renal failure. Immediate medical attention is critical, and treatment is typically supportive, with fluid replacement and electrolyte management being particularly important.
