What is Betnovate?

Betnovate cream, ointment, and lotion all contain the active ingredient betamethasone valerate, which is a type of medicine called a topical corticosteroid. It is used to alleviate symptoms associated with skin inflammation such as swelling, itching, and irritation. Betnovate is classified as a potent steroid and is used for the treatment of a variety of skin conditions including eczema, psoriasis, and dermatitis.

Active Ingredient Profile

The active ingredient in Betnovate is betamethasone valerate, a potent corticosteroid with anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive properties. It has the molecular formula C₂₇H₃₇FO₆ and a molecular weight of 476.58. The concentration of betamethasone valerate in Betnovate cream and ointment is 0.1%. In the lotion formulation, the concentration is also 0.1%.

Indications for Use

Betnovate is indicated for the treatment of inflammatory skin disorders that respond to corticosteroids. It effectively treats and manages eczema, psoriasis, seborrheic dermatitis, contact dermatitis, and other types of dermatitis. Its use should be as per a healthcare professional’s prescription and should not be used on skin conditions caused by infections, unless advised otherwise.

Instructions for Application

Prior to applying Betnovate, clean and dry the affected area of skin. A thin layer of the medicine should be gently applied to the entire area of skin that needs treatment. Hands should be washed both before and after application of the product, unless the hands are the treated area. Betnovate cream or ointment is typically applied 1-2 times per day, while the frequency for the lotion may differ. Duration of treatment should not be extended beyond the period prescribed by a healthcare professional.

Specific Dosage Guidance

The dose of Betnovate will depend on the condition being treated. Generally, a small amount should be applied to the affected area 1-2 times per day. For more severe conditions, the frequency of application may be increased, but only under medical supervision. Once the condition starts to improve, the frequency should be decreased. Adverse Reactions and Side Effects

Instructions in Case of Missed Dose

If a dose of Betnovate is missed, it should be applied as soon as remembered unless it is almost time for the next scheduled dose. In the case of close timing, the missed dose should be skipped, and the regular dosing schedule resumed. Double application to make up for a missed dose should be avoided to prevent the risk of adverse effects from overapplication.

Overdose Management

An overdose of Betnovate is unlikely to occur due to its topical application.
