Stromectol

What is Stromectol?

Stromectol is a brand-name formulation of ivermectin, a broad-spectrum antiparasitic agent. It is classified as an avermectin and works by paralyzing and ultimately killing parasites through disruption of their nervous system.

Approved Uses

This medication is FDA-approved for the treatment of intestinal strongyloidiasis and onchocerciasis caused by parasitic worms. Stromectol is also widely used for off-label indications such as scabies and head lice, often when topical treatments have failed.

Dosage & Administration

The standard dosage is calculated by body weight, commonly prescribed as a single oral dose of 150–200 mcg/kg. Tablets are taken on an empty stomach with a full glass of water. For conditions like scabies, a repeat dose may be recommended after 7–14 days.

Pharmacodynamics

Ivermectin binds to glutamate-gated chloride channels in invertebrate nerve and muscle cells, increasing the permeability of the cell membrane, leading to paralysis and death of the parasite. It does not affect the human central nervous system due to the blood-brain barrier.

Safety and Side Effects

Possible side effects include dizziness, nausea, mild skin rash, and fatigue. In patients with heavy parasite loads, treatment can cause inflammatory reactions (e.g., Mazzotti reaction) due to parasite death. These symptoms are usually self-limiting.

Warnings and Precautions

Stromectol should be used with caution in individuals with liver disease. It is not generally recommended during pregnancy unless the benefits outweigh the risks. The safety in children under 15 kg body weight has not been established.

Storage Instructions

Store at room temperature between 15°C and 25°C (59°F–77°F) in a dry place. Keep in original packaging, away from heat and moisture. Do not use after the expiration date printed on the pack.

Drug Interactions

Use caution when combining Stromectol with other CNS depressants or medications affecting GABA transmission. Always consult a healthcare provider about all medications being taken concurrently.
