Subject: Condition of packed instruments/sets after a sterilization cycle

Could you please up date me on what condition packed instruments/sets should be when they are removed after a sterilization cycle?

Hallo Noreen

The recommended practice for pack inspection after sterilization include continuous checks for:

  • The integrity of the outer wraps (punctures, tears, pinholes)
  • The integrity of seals
  • Correct colour change of the external indicator
  • Correct labeling (sterilization date, batch number, information on content, operators name, as appropriate, e.g.)
  • Containers have to be checked for correct closure seals
  • The load contents has to be free of visible liquids/droplets of water on the outside of packages

It is essential that also the person who intends to use the article always inspects the pack before opening it. See also Education / Recommendation of the Quality Task Group [15]

Hope this helps!
Kind regards
Josy Holdener
