Subject: Cleaning standards for reusable device that is entered into sterile field covered by sterile drape

What are the cleaning standards for a reusable device that is entered into the sterile field covered by a sterile drape? Specifically, is an alcohol wipe adequate cleaning for a device introduced into the sterile field under a sterile, disposable drape during a interventional radiology procedure. The device remains external to the patient and has electronic components. If alcohol is not appropriate is rinsing and brushing with a detergent adequate?

My suggestion would be to follow manufacturers instructions. This would give indications on what cleaning processes are suitable for the item.

Dear Mr. Kelley,

The standard for medical devices introduced into a sterile field is clear - they have to be sterile.
However not knowing the exact procedure and the connection to the sterile field my advice is - do consult someone from a Infection Control Department.
