Subject: Number of autoclave tapes on the sterile package

Dear Experts,

My colleagues and I have a discussion regarding quantity and direction of autoclave tapes one can use on the sterile package.

The American group say that only one piece of tape shall be used. Would a second piece of tape be required, it must be placed in the same direction.

The European group say more than one piece of tape can be used, if required. Should the tape be placed on the short end of the package, naturally it will be placed in a different direction. The European group prefer to have a secure package.

Please, advice us on this matter.

Dear Mona,

The use of external indicator tape serves two purposes: Securely seal the closure of the wrapper, provide an external visual indication, by changing color, that the package has been subjected to sterilization conditions.
The different taping methods do depend mainly on the packaging material and "habits". The tapes that were in use for linen wrapper did not have the same bonding power when used on synthetic reusable or disposable materials. When tape started to pop-off of disposable wrappers, supplier of indicator tape, recommended to wrap the tape, all around the package so that the tape would adhere to itself and not dependent upon the tape sticking to the wrapper. New tapes cam on the marked just for disposable with more tack or adhesive power. The tape should prevent resealing if the package is opened or if the seal is compromised.
There is no international standard for the number and direction to put the tapes on the packages. The answer is, as is so often the case: Know your product, its strengths and weakness, the need of the users and act accordingly.

Best regards
Josy Holdner
