When washing ophthalmic instruments should one ultra sonic the instruments first before they go into the washer or can they go straight into the washer? cannulated items must be ultra soniced first. would like advice on this.

Ophthalmic instrument are treated in the same method as all other instruments. If you put your instruments in the ultra sonic before the washer disinfector, then it applies to ophthalmic instruments as well. Cannulated instruments should be cleaned prior the machine cleaning using air guns or other means. The only exception related to ophthalmic instruments is that since they are delicate, special steps should be taken to avoid damage (cover net over the instruments, etc.)
