Re:- lint generation in the Operating Theatre from nonwoven cellulose or synthetic packaging material, disposable gowns, drape packs etc.

I would appreciate any information regarding research or published items relating to the lint generation from cellulose nonwoven and synthetic nonwoven products used in the Operating Theatre. Thankyou.

Foreign bodies such as suture material, lint from surgical sponges, or talc from surgical gloves can cause an inflammatory reaction in the body and the formation of adhesions.

Dear Glenys

In Europe we are publishing the EN 13795 standards
"Surgical drapes, gowns and clean air suites, used as medical devices for patients, clinical staff and equipment.
Part 1 = General requirements for manufacturers, processors and products
Part 2 = Test methods
Part 3 = Performance requirements.

In the standard we have included as well a lint test because everybody is well aware that lint/particles are a potential hazard for the patient.

With other words any material brought into the market has to fulfil these standards ( Part 3 has not yet been official published).

I understand that you are based in the Australia. I will leave on Wednesday Oct. 13 to Australia and I will speak on the SPRACA State Conference in Canberra on Friday the 15th. These standards will be a part of my speech.

After that I will be travelling through Australia with Draeger (Mrs Nuala Thomason) and it would be a pleasure to meet you.

A lot have been written about Lint however I find it a pitty that very old publications (1970) are used. These publications do not have any value due to the fact that since fabrics have changed.

Please do not hesitate to contact me on my e-mail.

At the same time I would like to advice you to visit the website:
