Subject: Hard water

We are using tap water in washing surgical instruments which is considered hard water, will this cause corrosion of the surgical instruments? And if so what are the charactarestics of the water used in washing and flushing of surgical instruments?

In the Education section of this web site you can find the AKI Red brochure: proper maintenance of instruments. You will find there all the answers to your questions concerning water quality

Ahalan Imteyaz.

Scale (Calzium, Magnezium) makes the "Hardness". It is bad in cold water systems and disaster in hot water and steam systems. Correct for materials (metal, textile) too.
You can get rid of it by treating the water (softening, distilling, displacing minerals etc.)
Look at ISO 11134, ISO 13683, AAMI/ANSI ST-46 and HTM 2010 for guidance.

The simple and most correct way is to get the Utilities requirements of the instruments and devices manufacturer prior to purchasing them. Follow the instruction! never compromize.
