Can anyone please clarify whether there is legislation regarding single use items (and also theatre gowns/drapes) coming into force in the UK, with effect from 01/01/2005.

I think you refer to the EN 13795-1: "Surgical drapes, gowns and clean-air suits, used as medical devices for patients, clinical staff and equipment.
