We have some catheters and mounted coronary stents from Medtronics,Guidant and Jomed. Expiry date was Nov-Dec 2004. Is it safe to use these items another six months or one year.

Dear Jacob

Expiration dates on products such as specialized catheters, stents ect. often refer more to possible product degradation than to the loss of sterility. Beyond the expiration date the manufacturer does not guarantee the safety of the stability of the item. My recommendation is not to use these outdated/expired items without the written agreement of the manufacturer.
Please see also Q00117 "Clean, unopened, expired".

Kind regards
Josy

You may want to check with the manufacturers of the stents directly. While the dates may refer to product degredation, you may also be dealing with old packaging before the application of event related sterilization practices. We have had manufactures of certain products that appeared to be outdated issue us a letter stating that the products were safe for continued use.
